Virgin River by Robyn Carr

Virgin River (Virgin River, #1)Virgin River by Robyn Carr
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I rarely watch a movie/TV series before reading a book. This time though, I did. I ended up binge watching Virgin River and loved it. There were so many cliff hangers that I could not wait for the show to return. So, I did what I should have done first…jumped into the book series.

This was pretty good. There were the same loved characters with subtle differences. The book does have a much faster moving romance between Mel and Jack. There is more romance in general which I enjoyed. There were some twists and turns that were very different than what I was expecting.

There were some details that were not in this book, but I know there are like twenty more in the series. I am not sure I will continue with the book series though. I enjoyed the show a little more and will probably just stick with that.

Overall, this was still really good though!

The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai

The Right Swipe (Modern Love, #1)The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was very excited for this one and very grateful when a friend sent me an advance copy. I was a little worried as this was pretty hyped, but I ended up really enjoying it.

I really loved how Rhiannon and Samson. I love their banter, how they meet, and how their relationship progressed over time. They were just so cute.

This does deal with some heavier topics such as sexual harassment and athletic injuries.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one!

Break the Fall by Jennifer Iacopelli

I tend to really enjoy books around gymnastics! I was excited for this one, but I was not expecting the story to take the turns that it did. It was a little like a spin off on what is going on in the real world of US Gymnastics today. This does have triggers for sexual abuse. It did not have any graphic scenes and is more about believing what happened to a fellow gymnast. It is a story about teammates and the world coming together around a bigger issue than just competition. It also covers the subject with perpetrators and how they can try to groom a victim before the abuse starts. This was an important part that you do not normally see within a story and I like that it could be a good talking point when reading this one.

I was expecting to learn more around Audrey and her injury. The story references her injury and the pain she is suffering throughout, but I would have liked to start the story with a little around her injury/recovery.

One thing that really irritated me was how the story continuously noted how horrible Audrey was doing during her competitions and practice. She would constantly say how she knew she was the worst on the team or messing up. She made the Olympic team! She cannot be that horrible! I also hate that she was only winning at first during due to her teammates messing up.

I absolutely loved how all of the girls from the different counties come together for the American team. I actually teared up during this moment! Again, this is very real to what is going on so it just hit harder than it normally would.

This does have a ton of actual gymnastics in it as well. There was almost a little too much for me which is something I never thought I would say. It dragged on a little too much for me as the competitions were very detailed. I know others will love this though.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one.

A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor

A Map for Wrecked GirlsA Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this one and am learning that I really enjoy stories involving being stranded. This was kept my attention the whole time.

This does deal with triggers for teacher/student relationship, date rape, drugs, abuse, and more. This follows Emma and Henri and their tumultuous sibling relationship. They had a very strong relationship until they did not. The story jumps between the siblings and Alex being on the Island, and several months before they were stranded. As the story continues you begin to see what happened between Emma and Henri. Henri was very unlikable throughout the whole story for me. I was personally happy to have the romance aspect thrown in with Alex and Emma. I think it needed to add something extra to the story.

The ending was a little rushed and I did not love the ending for Alex.

Overall, I enjoyed this one more than I was expecting though.

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was sent this book from the publisher/publicity team. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

I absolutely loved a previous series from the author and was really excited for her new release. I ended up DNFing this one though.

I ended up reading around 50% of this, and I just did not find myself caring for the story or the characters. For me, nothing was happening. I did not really care about Brenna and her ex-husband. I also did not really care to learn about what happened so many years ago. This was just not fast paced enough for me.

I even tried the audiobook with this one to see if that would help. The narrator did not distinguish her voice at all, and there were times I did not know if what was happening was with Brenna or Nate.

I am giving up on this one as it was not for me.

Call It What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer

Call It What You WantCall It What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have enjoyed previous Brigid Kemmerer books, but I never fell in love with them. Until now! I went into this one not expecting much and ended up really loving it.

This story deals with so many serious issues. Be aware there are triggers for infidelity, suicide, cheating scandals, lost friendships, forgiveness, pregnancy issues, and more. I think some books throw in so many issues that they are lost or just overwhelming within the story. Even with everything that is tackled within this story, I never felt like that. The author did a great job intertwining them all and making them all work together.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one!

The Merciless by Danielle Vega

The Merciless (The Merciless, #1)The Merciless by Danielle Vega
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This is not for the faint at heart. I do not know how this is young adult as it deals with a teen being tortured. It was much more graphic than I was expecting. I kept reading as I wanted to see what happened. This is not something I would normally read at all and definitely took me out of my comfort zone.

I am not sure if I will continue with the series or not at this point. I am interested to see what happens next though.

Last Day by Luanne Rice

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was sent this book from the publisher/publicity team. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

It is always the husband! Or is it? This one started off with a bang! It will leave you wanting to know what happens from the very first chapter. There was also things happening around the back story of the characters that made me want to keep reading.

This story does have triggers for murder, children being involved in the crimes, mental health, cutting, and infidelity.

I was a little disappointed as I kept reading. There were secrets revealed throughout, but nothing else really happened. I found myself being bored with the story and only pushed through to find out exactly what happened. There was so many repetitive scenes and unnecessary storylines.

Overall, it was ok but I needed more.
