The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck by Bethany Turner: Review

I was sent this book from Baker Publishing Group.  My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

Synopsis:
"Becoming a Christian is the best and worst thing that has ever happened to Sarah Hollenbeck. Best because, well, that's obvious. Worst because, up to this point, she's made her very comfortable living as a well-known, bestselling author of steamy romance novels that would leave the members of her new church blushing. Now Sarah is trying to reconcile her past with the future she's chosen. She's still under contract with her publisher and on the hook with her enormous fan base for the kind of book she's not sure she can write anymore. She's beginning to think that the church might frown on her tithing on royalties from a "scandalous" book. And the fact that she's falling in love with her pastor doesn't make things any easier.

With a powerful voice, penetrating insight, and plenty of wit, Bethany Turner explodes onto the scene with a debut that isn't afraid to deal with the thorny realities of living the Christian life.

MY REVIEW:

My Rating: 2.5 Stars
Format: Paperback
Source: Publisher
Release Date: October 2017

I was sent this book in exchange for a review.  My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

This story really intrigued me and I really wanted to love it.  But, I just could not get into it.  This deals with divorce, affairs, books and reading, and finding yourself when you feel nothing but lost.

Most reviews mention how funny this book was, and I just do not get it.  This starts off with the Sarah attending book club.  She does not really know anyone so she makes up names to describe the other members.  Most of the names were digs or negative things about the other womens appearance.  It is not that I was offended, as I do not get offended easily.  It was just not funny to me at all.

I also did not really connect with the story or the characters.  The plot moved very quickly, and everything moved so fast.  Within the first 50 pages our main character has gotten divorced and writing three novels in several months time.  The story continued to move at this pace.  I would have liked more time developing the characters and plot.

Overall, I know I am the unpopular opinion, but this was just ok.
